Heidi hikes the Grand Canyon

Last month our Environmental Manager, Heidi Etter undertook the ‘Rim to Rim’ challenge hiking through the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim. After training for 4 months in order to be able to complete the hike, she followed the North Kaibab and Bright Angel trails, descending and climbing over 10,000ft! Less than 1% of the 6 million annual visitors to the park embark on this hike – let alone complete it.

Over the course of her walk, Heidi passed through over a billion years of geologic history a day! The Grand Canyon area includes one of the most complete and studied sequences of rock on earth. From Precambrian through to Cenozoic, many of these major time periods can be seen through the dramatic scenery within the national park.

Below is Heidi on her epic walk, how many geologists can name the era of the rocks behind her?
